What’s Passion Got to Do With It?

Several years back a group of ladies and I went to see the movie, “The Passion of Christ.” Before the movie someone had asked what they meant by the “passion” of Christ.   I walked away from the  movie with pictures etched into my heart of a love born from the heart of God that serves others, obedience that sweats blood, light that spills out into the darkness , forgiveness that pours out onto the undeserving, holiness hung upon a cross, mangled and bleeding, willing to be separated from the eternal Father so that I, the executioner, will never have to experience separation from my heavenly Father again.  “Greater love hath no one than this, that He would lay down His life for His friends.” (John 15:13)

Passion was the motivation of all that was done for you and I on the cross.  Passion cries out, “I would fight thousands for your love, even if it cost everything!”  And it cost Jesus everything!  I noticed in the movie that when Simon the Cyrene is pulled from the crowd of onlookers and forced to carry the cross he is not too thrilled.  But, with every step Simon took, carrying the burdensome cross, looking into the eyes of Jesus, something seem to change.   His focus went from the weight of the cross to the one who bore it.  From the splinters piercing his shoulders to the Savior’s eyes piercing his heart.  From the burning lashes of the Roman soldier’s whip to a burning hunger in the pit of his soul to know this man called Jesus.

What a beautiful picture of Luke 9:23.  “If anyone will come after me, (Jesus) he must deny himself, (his will) take up his cross daily (God’s will) and follow me (Jesus).”

As the song goes, “I want to live like that, and give it all I have. So that everything I say and do points to You”.

I want to follow Him with passion, move mountains with passion, roll away stones with passion, take up the cross with passion, serve with passion and give everything that I am and have with the kind of fiery love that nailed Jesus to the cross.  I ache for that kind of passion for my Lord and Savior,  for the body of Christ, for my family, spouse, friends and yes, even my enemies.  I wouldn’t want it any other way nor would my God even if it cost me everything, yes even my life.  He wouldn’t have it any other way either!
